The dream of Hazrat Yusuf عليه السلام is defined in Quran in the strong meanings. Let’s read the background first.

Why did Hazrat Yusuf’s عليه السلام brother throw him in a deep well?

All the elder brothers grew hate and envy in their heart for Yusuf عليه السلام for the following reasons:

Hazrat Yusuf’s عليه السلام extraordinarily beauty

All the elder brothers grew hatred in their hearts for Prophet Yusuf عليه السلام as time passed. They envied Yusuf عليه السلام because he appeared unique and extraordinarily beautiful, whereas they were not.

One day they planned to take him away from his father and throw him in a well out of their hatred. So they approached their father and suggested sending Yusuf عليه السلام along on an outing with them.

Father’s love for Hazrat Yusuf عليه السلام

Hazrat Yaqoob عليه السلام was a loving father and had an exceptional love for his beloved son Yusuf عليه السلام. Although he had loved all of his other sons equally but, the love for  Yusuf عليه السلام was unique amongst them.

Father was reluctant to send Yusuf عليه السلام with them and told them about his fear of wolf attacks. But, his sons insisted that they would look after Yusuf عليه السلام and that he would have a good time with them. So, the father unwillingly permitted them to take Yusuf عليه السلام with but, he was worried about him.

The next day, they decided to travel a long way in search of a place where they could kill him or throw him away. They wanted to cast him into a land where he could not return to see his father.

Jealousy

His all brothers had jealousy and negativity in their hearts for him, so they planned to kill him. One of the brothers suggested not to kill him but throw in a deep well that any traveler might took him away from here. They agreed on that suggestion and found a deep enough well to throw him in. As they reached near the well, they led him there.

They grabbed him and removed his shirt under the guise of drinking water. Yusuf عليه السلام began to struggle and begged them to release him. Prophet Yusuf عليه السلام was defeated by his own brothers, who threw him down the well and dashed back home.

At the same time, Allah has sent Hazrat Jibrael for his protection in the well. Hazrat Jibrael helped him sit on a stone to be prevented him from drowning. The well became brighter by the grace of his dignity and he managed seeing in the well. Indeed, Allah had chosen him as a prophet and that was a great trial for Hazrat Yusuf to survive in a dark well.

All the brothers returned to their father weeping and crying. They lied to him that a wolf had attacked and eaten Yusuf عليه السلام in the jungle. They had stained his shirt with some false blood and showed it to their father.

Hazrat Yaqoob عليه السلام had realized by his knowledge of prophesy that all his sons had been lying and the blood stains were fake. Prophet Yaqoob عليه السلام was in the grief of losing his most beloved son, he prayed to Allah day and night for the life of Yusuf عليه السلام.

How did hazrat Yusuf عليه السلام come out of well?

After 2 or 3 days, an Egyptian caravan visited the well and stopped near that place. They threw their bucket to fetch some water from that well. Hazrat Yusuf عليه السلام saw that bucket and managed to sit on it, to come out of the well. The people were shocked to see an extraordinary handsome boy and concealed him as a treasure. Suddenly, the greedy brothers came and lied to the people of the caravan that he was their slave and they sold him at a low price.

And there came a caravan of travelers, they sent their water drawer to fetch some water, and he let down his bucket. He said, “Good news! Here is a boy.” And they concealed him, [taking him] as a treasure; and Allah knows what they do. And the brothers sold him for a reduced price and they had no concerns with him.
