Lineage of Prophet Muhammad - his family tree up to Adnan and Ibrahim

Studying the lineage of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ helps believers understand the deep historical roots of Islam’s final messenger. His blessed ancestry connects him to a long line of noble leaders of Quraysh and, through Prophet Ismail عليه السلام, to Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام. This sacred chain of descent preserves his pure background among the tribes of Arabia.

Believers explore this topic to appreciate how Allah chose the finest family for His beloved messenger. This article lists his family tree name by name, explains which parts are agreed upon, and shares what the Quran and authentic hadith say about it.

The Full Lineage of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ up to Adnan

Historians divide the ancestry of the Prophet ﷺ into three parts. The first part, from his father up to Adnan, is agreed upon by the scholars of seerah and genealogy. Imam al-Bukhari records it at the start of the chapter on the Prophet’s mission in his Sahih. The chain is:

  1. Muhammad ﷺ
  2. son of Abdullah
  3. son of Abdul-Muttalib (Shaybah)
  4. son of Hashim (Amr)
  5. son of Abd Manaf
  6. son of Qusayy
  7. son of Kilab
  8. son of Murrah
  9. son of Ka’b
  10. son of Lu’ayy
  11. son of Ghalib
  12. son of Fihr (Quraysh)
  13. son of Malik
  14. son of an-Nadr
  15. son of Kinanah
  16. son of Khuzaymah
  17. son of Mudrikah
  18. son of Ilyas
  19. son of Mudar
  20. son of Nizar
  21. son of Ma’add
  22. son of Adnan

His father Abdullah died before he was born. His grandfather Abdul-Muttalib was the leader of Makkah who rediscovered and re-dug the well of Zamzam and cared for the pilgrims. Hashim, his great-grandfather, is known in the seerah for organising the winter and summer trade journeys of Quraysh, which the Quran mentions in Surah Quraysh.

Qusayy united Quraysh in Makkah and took charge of the Kaaba. Fihr is the ancestor most genealogists identify as “Quraysh”, which is why the whole tribe carries that name. This careful preservation of names shows the meticulous record-keeping of the early Arabs.

Allah Chose Him From the Best of Lineages

The Prophet ﷺ himself described how Allah selected his family generation after generation:

“Allah chose Kinanah from the descendants of Ismail, chose Quraysh from Kinanah, chose Banu Hashim from Quraysh, and chose me from Banu Hashim.”

Sahih Muslim 2276

This hadith shows that his noble descent was not an accident of history but part of Allah’s plan. Even Abu Sufyan, while still an opponent of Islam, admitted before the Roman emperor Heraclius that the Prophet ﷺ came from a noble family among them.

Connection to Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام

The second part of the chain links Adnan back to Prophet Ismail عليه السلام, son of Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام. That Adnan descends from Ismail is accepted by the scholars, but the exact names and number of generations between them are disputed, so careful historians stop the detailed list at Adnan. The third part, from Ibrahim back to Adam عليه السلام, rests mostly on older reports and is not relied upon in detail.

Prophet Ibrahim عليه السلام built the Kaaba with his son Ismail عليه السلام in the valley of Makkah. Their descendants settled around the sanctuary and became its guardians. Ibrahim and Ismail prayed for a messenger to be raised from among their own offspring, and the Prophet ﷺ is the answer to that prayer.

“Our Lord, and send among them a messenger from themselves who will recite to them Your verses and teach them the Book and wisdom and purify them.”

His Mother’s Lineage

The mother of the Prophet ﷺ was Aminah bint Wahb, of the clan of Banu Zuhrah. Her line meets his father’s line at Kilab, because Zuhrah was the son of Kilab. Banu Zuhrah held high status in Quraysh, so both his father’s and mother’s families were among the most respected in Makkah.

Scholars of seerah also note that his parents and ancestors married through lawful marriage, as was recognised in Arab custom, and that his lineage was free of the immoral unions found in some pagan practices. This purity was known among the people of Makkah, and even his enemies could not attack him on the basis of his family.

Lineage and Taqwa: Keeping the Right Balance

Islam teaches that a person’s worth before Allah depends on righteousness, not bloodline. Allah says that the most noble of people in His sight are the most righteous. Studying the Prophet’s genealogy is valuable for history and for recognising the signs of prophethood, but it is not a reason for pride in one’s own tribe.

“Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.”

Quran 49:13

The Prophet ﷺ also warned his own family that their lineage would not save them without good deeds. When he called the clans of Quraysh publicly, he told them, including his daughter Fatimah, that he could not avail them anything before Allah, and that they should save themselves through faith and action.

Lessons From the Blessed Lineage

Reflecting on the family tree of the final messenger teaches us that Allah’s plans unfold across generations. The prayer of Ibrahim عليه السلام was answered thousands of years later. Parents can take heart that their righteousness and prayers can benefit their descendants long after them.

Many of the Prophet’s ancestors were known for generosity, hospitality to pilgrims, and protecting the weak. These qualities prepared the ground in which the message of Islam was later planted. Knowing this history also deepens our love for the Prophet ﷺ and makes the world he was born into feel real.

“Indeed, Allah chose Adam and Nuh and the family of Ibrahim and the family of Imran over the worlds.”
